February Dinner Meeting Recap
On February 2nd, 2010, the SPE Saudi Arabia Section enjoyed a dinner meeting featuring Abdallah S. Jum’ah, Former President and Chief Executive Officer of Saudi Aramco. The meeting was attended by a standing room only crowd of engineers, geoscientists, and dignitaries. Attendees agreed that Mr. Jum’ah delivered a riveting address on the topic of leadership, punctuated with humor and infused with his vast experience. Judging by the enthusiastic interest in the event, Sand Rose readers would enjoy reading Mr. Jum’ah’s speech in its entirety. Unfortunately, space does not permit it, so we provide the summary below. For those who were unable to attend the meeting, we can truly say that they missed a remarkable event. more info

Young Professionals Workshop Held at North Africa Technical Conference
A Young Professionals Workshop took place during the recent SPE North Africa Technical Conference & Exhibition, held in Cairo on February 14th. The timing of this event coincided with our own section’s out-of-Kingdom trip to Egypt (see pages 10-11). The organizing committee selected a theme of “Young Professionals, Up to the Challenge”. The format for this single day workshop featured brief talks by keynote speakers, following which informal discussion groups had the opportunity to expand upon the ideas shared by the speaker. more info

Cairo Trip
The SPE Saudi Arabia Section (SPE SAS) recently completed an out-of-Kingdom trip to Cairo, Egypt. The trip, organized by the Trips and Social Activities Committee saw a total of 50 members and their families come together for this five-day trip from February 10-14. Travelers enjoyed a variety of activities in Cairo. Here are a few highlights:
The Egyptian Museum – Those who had seen pictures before on television found the museum as they expected; dark, somewhat haphazard, and full of charm. This museum features some of the most incredible treasures of the ancient Egyptian world.
Pyramids and Giza - The Egyptians have established excellent vantage points for photography of these ancient structures. The Giza Pyramids are an awe-inspiring sight and truly an amazing wonder of the world. They are enormous and have a mystical feeling, which makes observing the pyramids a humbling experience. Although the no one tires of looking at the pyramids, many participants took the opportunity to enjoy a ride on a camel or horse during their time at Giza. more info
